in afghanistan that the top u.s. commander is now calling unfathomable. the half brother of hamid karzai gunned down in his own home. ahmed wally karzai was an influential figure inside afghanistan and a very controversial one who had deep connections with the white house. let's bring in our pentagon correspondent chris lawrence. lots at stake here as well, chris. what do we know? >> wolf, afghans who have been complaining about corruption in the afghan government probably will shed no tears at the death of ahmid wally karzai. on the other hand, he helped hamid karzai exert fouer down in the south in kandahar where the president probably would not have been able to exert that power. so his loss british columbiaens karzai at a time when negotiations with the taliban move forward and it also may have very big repercussions for the u.s. effort in the south. people called president hamid karzai's brother a corrupt gangster. but the cia's former head of counterterrorism says the u.s. may miss him. >> it's quite like live that what follows is going to be something that will not work to our interest.

to decide on holding a new trial. a suicide bomber in afghanistan killed five people today at a memorial service for ahmed wali karzai-- half-brother of the afghan president. the bomber blew himself up at a kandahar mosque where the service was under way. president karzai was not attending. the attack came as a u.n. report said afghan civilian deaths are up 15 percent from a year ago. officials with the u.n. assistance mission in afghanistan blamed 80% of the killings on insurgents. >> this dramatic growth was mainly due to the use of landmine-like pressure plate, improvised explosive devices or i.e.d.s by the anti-government elements. we at unnama documented 1,462 civilian deaths. >> sreenivasan: nato air strikes -- mainly involving helicopters -- were the leading cause of civilian deaths by international forces. the first american combat forces began leaving afghanistan today as part of a gradual pull-out. army national guard units from iowa boarded a military plane at the bagram airbase terminal. they're among some 1,000 troops set to leave afghanistan this month. last month, presiden

or exceptional drought. a pair of roadside bombs in southern afghanistan today killed at least 19 people, including some children. both blasts went off in helmand province, when a minibus and a tractor struck separate mines. meanwhile in the east, a bomb killed two nato service members. there was no word on their nationalities or the specific location of the attack. thousands of egyptian protesters gathered in cairo's tahrir square today, six months after a popular uprising made the square famous. it was filled with egyptians supporting a variety of political movements, including ultraconservative muslims calling for the implementation of strict islamic law. protestors braved the heat to step up pressure on the country's ruling military council and repeat demands for reform. it was one of the largest crowds to fill tahrir square since president hosni mubarak was ousted from power in february. norwegians paused today for memorial services and the first funerals of the victims of last week's twin attacks. the number of dead was raised to 77. and police said it was likely the self-confessed

the savings would come from iraq and afghanistan and don't materialize and votes on a balanced budget amendment but what the democrats reviews to do is tie an increase in the debt ceiling to passing the balanced budget amendment. you can see the rough outlines of a deal. any deal would have to go back to the house. would these conservatives especially tea party members that speaker boehner had to make concessions to, what would they do if it comes back monday night just hours before the deadline, would they vote for that? >> 201 votes in favor of this legislation. right now 196. take a look. as of now 12 republicans have bolted from the leadership from john boehner, the speaker, and eric cantor the majority leader and right now 12 republicans have voted against and still not there. 216. there is still plenty of time left. nine minutes plus for this vote to conclude. it's a fascinating development as you say. by the way, we're told john boehner was mulling around and didn't seem overly concerned but it is still not a done deal yet. once this does pass, john, assuming it passes, gets 21

and distinction in iraq and afghanistan would feel that way to draw back on the benefits that they earned. during the bush years our country spent $1.5 trillion in iraq and national defense. the turnaround in our budget picture during the bush years was remarkable. in october of 2008, cnn reported that the debt clock had run out of numbers. the debt clock actually had exceeded 13 digits that had been allotted to the clock and had to be revised. according to one report at the end of the bush term, the number of jobs in the nation increased by 2%. that's the lowest at anytime since data began to be collected seven decades ago. gross domestic product was at the lowest pace since the truman administration, and the price that america has paid for the theology that suggested during all of those years that tax cuts pay for themselves. you can't find a mainstream economist in this town today who will acknowledge that argument. and yet we hear now more tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. by the time that the bush years ended, the debt had increased to $10.6 trillion, setting a record for any administra
